Urizen Freaza, originally from Tenerife, currently resides in Berlin. He is a self-taught photographer and a film-maker. Urizen is a member of Film Shooters Collective and part of the team behind the AnalogueNow Festival.
Urizen Freaza really believes that instant photography has that extra layer which is the physical one.
Even more than film in general, polaroids are objects, objects that you can hold. When you see a polaroid you know the photographer, and most likely everyone appearing on it, has touched it.
They passed it around and looked at it and reacted to it. Right there, as if it was part of the process. It’s a fetish in the animistic sense of the word.
In Urizen’s words:
“The power of instant photography lays for me in the delivery of a full object where all layers are crushed together: the subject photographed, the emotional state and associations of the photographer, which were the reason why he/she chose that framing, the light hitting on its sensitive surface, the chemical layers crystalizing and reacting to conform the image, the emotional state and emotional baggage of the viewer… All together crushed into one entity, that is so true, so real that you’re actually holding it. The goal would be to blend all those realities, to intervene all of those layers at the same time and as much as possible, to describe the truth.
Instant Photography bursts the barrier between the photographic act and the photographic piece, turning a moment into something real and tangible. But at the same time it allows the tactile, direct manipulation of the photography, to turn it into an experience beyond the simply seen.
Quantum Physics says the Universe is quantified in packages of indissoluble units, small bricks that conform our Reality. And it says not only matter, but also time is quantified. Therefore, if we perceive our reality as a function of time, and if this one only exists as a succession of moments, then our reality is made out of instants and instantaneity is the only truth.”

Urizen Freaza es un firme defensor de que la fotografía instantánea tiene un estrato adicional, el físico. Más allá de un simple carrete, las polaroid son objetos, objetos que puedes sostener.
Cuando ves una polaroid sabes que el fotógrafo, y probablemente todos los que aparecen en ella, la han tocado. Se la pasaron de unos a otros y la vieron y reaccionaron ante ella. Ahí mismo, como si fuese parte del proceso.
Es un objeto fetiche en el sentido animista de la palabra.
En palabras del propio Urizen:
“El poder de la fotografía radica para mi en la entrega de un objeto completo, en el cual todas las capas se fusionan: el sujeto fotografiado, el estado emocional y asociaciones del fotógrafo (que fueron la razón por la cual él o ella eligió ese encuadre), la luz incidiendo sobre su sensible superficie, las capas químicas cristalizando y reaccionando para formar la imagen, el estado y bagaje emocional del espectador… Todos los elementos fusionados en una entidad tan verdadera, tan real que tu mismo la puedes sostener. El objetivo es combinar todas esas realidades, interceder en todas esas capas al mismo tiempo y lo más posible, para describir la realidad.
La Fotografía Instantánea hace estallar la barrera entre el acto fotográfico y la obra fotográfica, transformando un instante en algo tangible y real. Al mismo tiempo permite la manipulación táctil, directa de la fotografía, para transformarla en una experiencia más allá de lo que se ve a simple vista.
La física cuántica dice que el universo se cuantifica en paquetes de unidades indivisibles, pequeños ladrillos que conforman nuestra realidad. También dice que no sólo la materia, si no que también el tiempo se cuantifica. Basándonos en esto, si percibimos nuestra realidad como una función del tiempo, y si este soolo existe como una sucesión de momentos, entonces nuestra realidad está formada de instantes, y la instantaneidad es la única verdad.”
