Whenever I’m passing through Born and have some time for myself, I head to Arxiu Fotografic de Barcelona. A bit hidden from view, this gallery is a small gem in the city center, giving its visitors the opportunity to travel back in time with the help of photography.
The exhibition currently on display is a collection of photographs by Argentinian Humberto Rivas, themed around the scars left by the Spanish Civil War. Architectural landscape meets emotional landscape, with ruins and damaged buildings next to deeply touching portraits.
One could almost say after viewing the exhibition that while some “wounds” are on public display, others are as impermanent as our lives and kept buried inside us, the role of the photographer being to document both as essential to history.
Cada vez que paseo por el Born y tengo tiempo para mí, mi destino habitual es el Arxiu Fotografic de Barcelona. Un poco escondido, esta galería es una pequeña joya en el centro de la ciudad, dando a sus visitantes la oportunidad de viajar en el tiempo con la ayuda de la fotografía.
La exposición que se exhibe en la actualidad es una colección de fotografías del argentino Humberto Rivas, temática de las cicatrices dejadas por la Guerra Civil Española. El paisaje arquitectónico se encuentra con un paisaje emocional, con ruinas y edificios dañados junto a retratos profundamente conmovedores.
Casi se podría decir después de verla, que mientras algunas “heridas” aún son públicas, algunas otras son tan impermanentes como nuestras vidas y enterradas dentro de nosotros, siendo el papel del fotógrafo el documentar como parte esencial para la historia.
