The girl leans onto a column; next to her a boy, a rose proudly blooming out of his backpack, joins her in contemplation of the painting in front of them. They sit in silence, both still, they seem to have been sitting like this for a long time. The painting is Hotel Room by Edward Hopper – on display as a part of the “A Thyssen never seen” exhibition @ CaixaForum Barcelona.
It’s easy to feel absorbed by Hopper’s atmosphere. As awe-inspiring is the realism of Andrew Wyeth’s My young friend, the rawness of Lucian Freud’s Last Portrait and the hidden symbolism of Max Ernst’s Solitary and Conjugal Trees, all part of the same expo. More resonant names abound: Raphael, Cezanne, Chagall, Beckmann and Estes among them.
Leaving their home Madrid for the first time, the Thyssen paintings delight us in an exploration of five themes: religion, portraits and characters, objects and still life, landscapes and urban spaces. All of them transcending art currents, movements and techniques, reminding us that there is more than one way of looking at the world around us.
The expo will be closing soon – on February 5th – so for all of you who haven’t had the chance or would like to repeat, please go and indulge in its brilliant variety!

Se quedan en silencio, casi sin moverse, por lo que parece que es mucho tiempo. El cuadro es Habitación de hotel de Edward Hopper – parte de la exposición “Un Thyssen nunca visto” @ CaixaForum Barcelona.
Es facil sentirse absorbido por la atmosfera de Hopper. Igual de impresionante es el realismo de Andrew Wyeth con Mi joven amiga, la crudeza de Lucian Freud en Último retrato y el simbolismo escondido de Max Erns en Árbol solitario y árboles conyugales, todos parte de la misma expo. Abundan mas nombres con resonancia: Raphael, Cézanne, Chagall, Beckmann y Estes son solo unos de ellos.
Los cuadros dejaron por la primera vez su casa en Madrid para invitarnos a una exploración dividida en cinco temas: religión, retratos y personajes, objetos y bodegón, paisajes y espacios urbanos. Temas que trascienden en corrientes de arte, movimientos y técnicas, recordándonos simplemente que hay más de una manera de ver lo que está a nuestro alrededor.
La exposición se acabara pronto – el 5 de febrero – así que por los que no habéis ido todavía o queréis repetir, ¡hay que darse prisa para disfrutar de su brillante variedad!
